Travel report #13

Argentina - San Ignacio and Buenos Aires

Friday March 2, 2001

Time to travel on, took the bus into Argentina. Arrived in San Ignacio, a small, lost town. We felt as we were the only tourist there (and probably were). It was very warm. We got a nice little cabin.
Used the afternoon to walk around in the Jesuit mission ruins that this small town is known for. Facinating, but not that great. The Jesuits were missioning here, they wore black dresses (amazing that they could in this heat and sun!) and helped the indinan population that were used as slaves. The heat made our experience of the ruins a bit troublesome and probably made us rush through a bit...

Got a bus to Posadas. Spent the afternoon there, walking the streets and visited a beach on the riverfront. The girls had a bath! Again, painfully warm!

In the evening we got on a night bus to Buenos Aires.

Sunday March 4, 2001

A luxury bus so we all got some sleep! Found a OK hotel, expencive to stay in Buenos Aires. And hot! It was 41 celcius!!

Walked the streets and found a nice market with tango dancers! Really nice!

We then tried to find a football match (Boca Juniors), but found the wrong stadium, the old one, so all we got was a photo of us at the place were Maradona once played :-) Got to walk some of the back streets of Buenos Aires, interesting.
In the evening we headed for another Tango show. Found this at a cultural house and got to see a very professional pair dancing. Amazing!
We also got another funny experience - as we walked through a park we were approaced by a crazy man with a gun. He yelled "Plata, Plata", we said we did not understand and we really never felt threatened by the gun he had. It looked very fake and probably was. One against four, and he very stressed, we confused, it ended with us running off back to were we came from. Strange experience, we were almost mugged in the middle of Buenos Aires! Crazy!!

Monday March 5, 2001

Monday and the city more alive. We walked around in the streets and did some shopping. BA a nice city with long pedestrian zones and many sights. We went to the docks and had some fantastic ice cream (Anne Marie's birthday).

Saw the English tower (Big Ben lookalike) next to the Falklands war memorial (funny how they match the sights...).
Time to say goodbye, to Andreas and Anne Marie, and to South America. We all four took at taxi to the airport, their flight only an hour ahead of ours.
Bye, bye, South America.
