Travel report #5

Mexico - Guaymas and Copper Canyon

Saturday-Monday November 18-20

Guaymas is a nice and quite small city. By the sea, nice temprature and everything is cheap. We relax for a couple days, having a sort of vacation from the travelling...
The Monday was a holliday in Mexico (celibrating the revolution) and the streets were packed with people and a big parade. Almost like 17. may back home, but we do not have the ambulance and fire squad in the parade with lights and sirenes...

We both got a hair cut, without beeing able to communicate with the hair dresser :-)

Tuesday November 21

We travel by bus from Guaymas to Los Mochis. A 5-6 hours trip where we got to see some contryside Mexico. The first long bus jorney was mainly during nighttime, so this was our first look at Mexico ouside Guaymas. Lots of lovely mountains, costline, cacti, people and houses. Sad to see all the garbage (soeppel) flowting around...
Los Mochis is only a transit city to get onto the Copper Canyon railway.

Wednesday November 22

We got up before the sun rise and made it to the train station (an entertaining trip with a local bus!). The train left 7am and we got to see the sun rise. Nice. The first hours of the train ride was nothing special. Lots of backcountry life, houses and small farms, more cacti and vegetation (violet trees!).
The train the started on the climbing and the view got more interessting. Lots of bridges and tunnels as we climbed up into the mountains and the canyon-land. Further up the vegetation changed to pine woods. Still lot of cacti and more and more spectacular scenary.

At Divisadero we get the first real Canyon view. Similar to Grand Canyon, but with a lot more vegetation inside the canyon. Amazing view! Many Tarahumara people (indian people) had shops and sold food at the rim where the train stopped.

We continued on the train for another hour or so to Creel where we stayed for 2 nights.

Thrusday November 23

Creel is on high altitude and it was cold where the sun didn't shine. We had a long walk, but it was windy and not to pleasant. The area is packed with funny shaped stones. Amazing.

Friday November 24

After more than a day in the cold climate, we decided to head back to the coastline. We took the same amazing train trip back and got into Los Mochis around midnight.
Stopped at Divisadero also on the way back.

To get to the hotel we had a interessting taxi ride, 6 people with lots of luggage plus the driver in a normal sized car, the boot could not be closed, the car stopped on each corner, but we made it safely to the hotel :-)
